Humans have an inherent desire for dominion, seeking to exert influence over their surroundings and others. This inclination can be observed from early childhood and becomes more apparent as we mature. The need for control is not unique to humans; it is a common trait among animals, often resulting in territorial behaviour. While this aspect of our nature is natural, it can lead to conflicts, wars, and other negative consequences. We will explore the origin of dominion, its potential for misuse, and the importance of choosing the right influence in our lives.

The Genesis of Conflict

Throughout history, conflicts and disputes, whether international, national, or personal level, have often been rooted in the desire for dominance. Acts that display power or dominance, such as mistreating animals or exerting control over others, stem from this need to establish authority. This raises the question of why nature or God would grant us such authority when it often leads to harm.

Understanding Dominion in the Context of Love

In the beginning, according to religious teachings, humans were created in the image and likeness of God, who bestowed upon them the authority to govern and cultivate the earth. This suggests that dominion is an inherent part of our nature. However, the key to exercising dominion lies within the framework of love. Dominion driven by love leads to peace, creativity, and liberation. Love allows individuals and environments to flourish and express their authentic selves.

The Power of Influence

Dominion should not be understood as absolute control but rather as creating an environment that nurtures growth and authenticity. Each person carries within them the potential to manifest the attributes of love, analogous to a seed with inherent potential. However, external influences, such as oppressive environments, can hinder growth and cause dysfunction. True dominion is creating the right environment for individuals to blossom and become their true selves.

Replicating God’s Environment

The purpose of human existence is to replicate the environment created by God, allowing His glory to be seen. Unfortunately, this environment has been corrupted. The influence we exert is tainted by negative traits such as impatience, unforgiveness, brutality, bullying, physical and verbal abuse, anger and the like. This polluted influence affects those around us, perpetuating cycles of oppression and control. It is crucial to recognize that true liberation is expressed in love.

The Danger of Fractured Spirits:

When individuals with fractured spirits obtain positions of power and authority, they spread their negative influence throughout their sphere of influence. This phenomenon is evident in homes where abusive parents often raise abusive children. Such individuals find it challenging to change their mindset if they remain close to the source of their influence. This pattern can also be observed in broader society when the influence of negativity pollutes relationships and institutions.

Choosing Whom We Allow to Dominate Us

We must exercise caution when deciding who we allow to dominate us. In relationships, both partners should have equal dominion over themselves, as excessive dominance by one party can change the dynamics and atmosphere of the relationship. In society, we must be mindful of the influences we allow and resist those that impose excessive dominance. By selecting positive, loving influences, we can break free from cycles of oppression and be our true selves.

Conclusion

Understanding the nature of dominion and its potential for misuse is crucial for fostering healthy relationships and creating a harmonious society. By recognizing the importance of exercising dominion within the framework of love, we can create environments that promote growth, authenticity, and liberation. It is vital to be vigilant in choosing the influences we allow in our lives, ensuring that they align with our values and contribute to our personal and collective well-being.
